Do you know your notes?

Do you know your notes? If you don’t here’s a great exercise:

  1. Name all the open strings on your guitar- E, A, D, G, B, E- see: that wasn’t so hard!

  2. Name all the natural notes in the music alphabet- A B C D E F G- you are 2 for 2!

  3. Set up columns with the open guitar strings- E A D G B E

  4. Match the open strings with which natural note they are

  5. B and C are 1 fret apart so C is the 1st fret on the B String so that would go under the B column and F is on the 1st fret of the E string so F would go under the E column

  6. Now you are on your way to knowing the natural notes because every other natural note (G,A,D,E) are 2 frets away from one another so G would be under the F note on the E column on the 3rd fret and A would be underneath G on the same E column and so on until you get to the 12 fret and you are back on the E note where you started with an open string.

  7. Repeat for the following strings

  8. You will soon know all your natural notes!

  9. Pat yourself on the back!

A Picture of this will really help!
